Every book starts somewhere.

Unspoken Weight was written from the experience of being a child whose behavior was often noticed before anyone stopped to ask what was behind it. That same child is sitting in classrooms, living in homes, and walking through the world right now. Sometimes the difference between being labeled and being understood is one adult willing to look a little closer. That’s what I hope this book can do. Help someone recognize what a child may not know how to say yet. So talk about it. Share it with someone. Tell a parent, a teacher, a mentor, or anybody who works with young people. Ask them to leave their email too. You never know which conversation might help a child be seen.

Say Hi to the Author

Raheim Marcus has spent years around young people who were often judged before they were understood. He knows that feeling personally.

In Unspoken Weight, he looks back at the family, school, loss, identity, and choices that followed him from childhood into adulthood.

Today, his work as an educator and mentor puts him beside young people carrying things they do not always know how to explain. He does not start with the behavior. He starts with the person.

I wrote Unspoken Weight because people are often judged by what they do before anyone asks what they’ve been through.

I know what that feels like.

Working with young people, I started seeing the connection between the child I was and the adult I became.

THEN I WROTE A BOOK!

All of ME

At 29, I made this video by taking my life backward.

Picture by picture. Year by year. All the way back to the beginning.

What makes it crazy now is when I made it, I had no idea what was about to happen next six months later.

The school bus. The students, eventually the classrooms. The moments that would eventually force me to look at that little boy differently.

I thought I was making a video about where I had been.

Turns out, I was standing right before the long walk began.

"I refused to let what hurt me have the final word."

"I refused to let what hurt me have the final word."

"I refused to let what hurt me have the final word."

"I refused to let what hurt me have the final word."

"I refused to let what hurt me have the final word."

"I refused to let what hurt me have the final word."
